Navala Village Day Tour — Sevusevu in the Ba Highlands (53 chars)

Navala is the last village in Fiji where almost every home is still a thatched bure, laid out in rows on a green slope in the Ba Highlands. Getting there takes a morning: out through Lautoka's cane country, up through Ba, then a climb into the hills. You do not simply arrive. At the edge of the village we present yaqona to the chief and ask to be received — the sevusevu — and only once that welcome is given are you a guest rather than a visitor. Then you are walked through the village by someone who lives in it. Your guide will show you how to sit, when to clap, and how to accept the bilo when it comes round. Take your hat and sunglasses off. Cover your shoulders and knees. Ask before you photograph anyone. Runs Monday to Saturday — Sunday belongs to church and to rest.
