Sigatoka Sand Dunes — Guided Walk in Fiji's 1st Park (51 chars)

Fiji's first national park is not what most people picture when they picture Fiji. Here the coastal forest gives way to great grey dunes running down to a wild, unswimmable stretch of Pacific, and the wind has been rearranging them for thousands of years. What it uncovers is the reason the park exists: pottery, and burials, dating back millennia. You may well walk past shards lying in the open. Leave them exactly where they are — people are buried in these dunes. Two trails leave the visitor centre. The short Yatole kaleka walk takes an hour with good birdwatching along the way. The longer Yatobalavu route runs about two hours and takes you up over the high dunes for the view. Wear closed shoes, not sandals — the sand gets genuinely hot — and carry water. Come in the morning. The park closes for lunch between 1 and 2pm.
