Tavuni Hill Fort — Guided Visit with a Naroro Guide (50 chars)

Four kilometres out of Sigatoka, on a bluff above a bend in the river, a Tongan chief named Maile Latumai built a fortified village in the 1700s. Ring ditches, terraces, a ceremonial ground, and burials — much of it still readable in the earth. Tavuni is a National Archaeological Site, and the people of Naroro village next door are its guardians. One of them will walk you round it. That matters, because a semi-restored earthwork does not explain itself. What you are paying for here is the person telling you what you are looking at, and the view from the ramparts down the Sigatoka Valley, which is worth the climb on its own. Dress modestly, shoulders and knees covered. Stay with your guide, particularly near the burial ground. Take nothing away with you. There is a climb involved, and the last stretch of road is unsealed.
